STORRS, Conn. -- A memorial service will take place Dec. 7 at the University of Connecticut for Robert G. Mead Jr., an emeritus professor of modern and classical languages who died Oct. 21.
The service is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Simon and Doris Konover Auditorium of the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center on Babbidge Road. The service, coordinated by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, will celebrate Mead's many contributions to cultural understanding in the Americas and the improvement of the quality of foreign language teaching.
Mead joined the UConn languages faculty in 1949. He retired in 1984, but remained active in promoting the teaching of foreign languages through his work in professional organizations such as the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).
Two scholarship funds have been established in Mead's name. Contributions may be sent to either the UConn Foundation or the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
