WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A new student center named for Harry and Edith Gampel at the University of Connecticut's West Hartford campus will be formally dedicated Friday, May 3. The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Speakers will include President Harry J. Hartley, Russell Farnen, director of the West Hartford campus, Board of Trustees Chair Lewis B. Rome, and a student representative.
The student center, which was made possible through the generosity of the Gampel family, comprises a lounge area, meeting space, a game room and a television room. It is located on the third floor of the Undergraduate Building. The center is a popular meeting place for students who commute to classes at the non-residential campus.
Harry Gampel graduated from UConn in 1943 with a degree in business. He went on to become a leader in the state's construction industry. His name is also well known in the state and nationwide from the athletic facility at the Storrs campus named in his honor, the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
The family has strong connections with the University. Two of Gampel's daughters hold degrees from UConn and his granddaughter, Tracy Shapiro, will graduate in May.
