STORRS, Conn. -- Kandree Hicks of NORWALK, a junior at the University of Connecticut with a double major in cultural politics and Spanish, has been named a University Scholar, the highest academic honor the University bestows on undergraduate students.

Once selected, a University Scholar is allowed to pursue an academic program tailored to his or her particular intellectual interests and abilities. Hicks plans to study the effects of popular culture on ethnic identity for a University Scholar project titled "Identity Politics: American Voices." Her program will include a semester in Ecuador to study the ethnic consciousness of different groups in a Latin American country.

Hicks is a graduate of Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk.
