240 8th-grade girls will participate in science program (Released 3/5/97)

STORRS, Conn. -- More than 200 eighth-grade girls will gain more exposure to science, engineering and math at the University of Connecticut on March 14. The girls will participate in a program called "Multiplying Your Options," which brings female professionals from science, engineering and mathematics together with middle-school girls.

The conference is designed to make young women aware of the many career opportunities available to them while providing female role models and mentors who are successful in these professions. Along with being able to meet and talk with experts, the girls will participate in a variety of interactive workshops and presentations.

The program runs from 8:30 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Some of the scientists and engineers who will participate are from: Travelers Insurance Co., NYNEX, Phoenix Home Life Insurance Co., Northeast Utilities, Prudential Securities, Digital Equipment Corp., Lego Systems, Inc., The Connecticut Departments of Transportation and Environmental Protection, the State Police Forensic Laboratory and UConn.

ELLINGTON - Ellington Middle School

ENFIELD - John F. Kennedy Middle School

STORRS - Mansfield Middle School

GUILFORD - Adams Middle School

TOLLAND Tolland Middle School

HARTFORD - Lewis Fox Middle School

WILLINGTON - Hall Memorial School

LONDONDERRY, VT - Flood Brook School

WILLIMANTIC - Windham Middle School

MANCHESTER - Bennett Middle School, Illing Middle School
