Student awarded University's highest academic honor (Released 3/11/97)

STORRS, Conn. -- Jennifer Villarreal of Stratford, a junior at the University of Connecticut majoring in both English and Spanish, has been named a University Scholar, the highest academic honor the University bestows on undergraduate students.

Once selected, a University Scholar pursues an academic program tailored to his or her unique intellectual interests and abilities. Villarreal's University Scholar project is titled "Legal Rights of Minority and Immigrant Women in the United States," incorporating women's studies, Latin American studies and political science. She hopes to do an internship in Washington, D.C., in the fall.

A graduate of Bunnell High School in Stratford, Villarreal hopes to pursue a career as an advocate for women's rights.
