UConn and South African Leaders To Hold Press Conference (Released: 8/31/00)

STORRS, Conn. -- Leaders of the South African government will join UConn officials at a press conference to make a major announcement about UConn's involvement in two projects in South Africa. The press conference will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at noon on the top floor of Rome Commons, South Campus.

The press conference will feature speakers including two of the highest ranking women politicians in the world:

  • Frene Ginwala, speaker of the South African National Assembly (a position equivalent to the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate), a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress; and co-chair, Global Coalition for Africa;
  • Naledi Pandor, member of Parliament and chairperson of the South African National Council of Provinces (a position equivalent to U.S. Speaker of the House);

and also:

  • UConn President Austin;
  • U.S. Rep. Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn);
  • Amii Omara-Otunnu, associate professor of history, and director of the UConn-ANC Partnership Program.

The press conference will be preceded by a discussion between Ginwala, Pandor and students from UConn and the Edwin O. Smith High School (Regional District 19), also on the top floor of Rome Commons at 10:30 a.m. The media is welcome to attend this informal session.
