Groundbreaking Ceremony for Student Union May 1
(Released: April 30, 2002)

By Richard Veilleux, Office of University Communications

STORRS, Conn. -- A groundbreaking ceremony for the University of Connecticut's new and improved Student Union will be held on the Student Union Mall Wednesday, May 1, at 11:15 a.m. The ceremony will include the retrieval of a time capsule planted in a cement bench adjacent to the structure in 1982.

The three-phase, $45 million project will nearly double the size of the existing building. A 500-seat movie theater/lecture hall, a multipurpose room that will accommodate as many as 1,000 people, at least five restaurants, and new facilities for each of UConn's five cultural centers highlight the project. Space in the building for meetings will be nearly twice that currently available, all rooms will be hard-wired for computers, and the building will be air conditioned. Phase I of the project -- the largest and most extensive of what could be three phases -- will transform the section of the building running from the current breezeway to the north end of the structure, where the movie theater/lecture hall will be added. Phase I is projected to be completed by January 2004.
