STORRS, CT — The University of Connecticut will host several lectures at its Avery Point campus to commemorate 2009 as the Year of Science.
UConn was the first university in the nation to join 70 other institutions and organizations in the Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) to hail 2009 as a national, year-long celebration of science.
The Coastal Perspectives Lecture Series includes topics ranging from Charles Darwin and his legacy to how the environment affects society.
- Jan. 27, 7 p.m. Invasions and the Coast Robert Whitlatch, professor of marine sciences, and Nancy Balcom, interim associate director of Connecticut Sea Grant.
- Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m. Branford House The Legacy of Charles Darwin February 12, 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his landmark book, On the Origin of Species, in November 1859. Four speakers will discuss the legacy of Darwin’s many contributions to society.
- Constance Clark, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Michael Robinson, University of Hartford, Eric Shultz, University of Connecicut, and Jennifer Tucker, Wesleyan University.
- Feb. 24, 7 p.m. Historical Ecology, Fisheries & Human Relationships to the Sea Matthew McKenzie, assistant professor of history, Peter Auster, research associate professor of marine sciences.
- March 24, 7 p.m. Ocean Observatories, Technology & Society James O’Donnell, professor of marine sciences, and W. Frank Bohlen, professor of marine sciences.
- April 7, 7 p.m. The Oceans and Human Health Sandra Shumway, research professor of marine sciences, and Evan Ward, associate professor of marine sciences.
- April 21, 7 p.m. Climate Change and the Southern New England Coast Anji Seth, assistant professor of geography, and Jim Edson, associate professor of marine sciences.
Avery Point’s Coastal Perspective Lecture Series is free and open to the public.It will take place on the first floor of the Marine Sciences Building at the Avery Point campus, 1080 Shennecossett Road, Groton.
