[UPDATE (From Community Outreach - September 13):]
There has been a massive outpouring of volunteers throughout the country who have been interested in donating blood. Due to this overwhelmingly positive reaction, the American Red Cross is asking people to wait with their donations. Hospital patients in Connecticut and victims of this national disaster will continue to need blood and blood products over the upcoming weeks and into the future. To ensure that there is a safe and adequate blood supply in the weeks to come, the American Red Cross has asked that the University of Connecticut donors wait until the scheduled blood drive which is planned for October 15-19.

American Red Cross Blood Services staff will be on campus on Friday, September 14 between 9:30 am - 1:30 pm in the Student Union, in the Jonathan's hallway, to schedule appointments for the October Blood Drive.

You can help to meet this ongoing need for blood. Please come and sign up to donate!

Since yesterday (September 11) I have received a number of e-mails and phone calls asking about the possibility of a blood drive at UConn to assist the victims of yesterday's tragedies. The many expressions of concern I have heard in this terrible situation reflect well on all members of the University of Connecticut community.

We have been in touch with the Red Cross, who tell us that at this point in time it would overwhelm their system to set up a site here. The next regularly scheduled blood drive at the University is scheduled for October 15-19 in the Student Union Building, in the Community Room of the African American Center. We are working with the Red Cross to see if we can also have an earlier blood drive at UConn, possibly in the next few weeks. I will give you more details once the arrangements have been finalized.

In the meantime, individuals interested in giving blood right away may call 1-800-GIVE LIFE or check the American Red Cross web site at www.bloodct.org for information about blood drives around the state.
